From the invitation
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Vancouver cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition “L’Italia Mistica: Italian Rituals and Landscapes”. Mask-maker Alice Dessì will be in attendance. Wednesday, September 27, 2000, 6:00 pm.
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Vancouver will be hosting in its gallery a selection of works from the exhibition “L’Italia Mistica”, after its première at the Langley Centennial Museum and National Exhibition Centre in Fort Langley.
The spectacular exhibit features the works of two Italian artists: international photographer Oliviero Olivieri and Florence-based renowned mask-maker Agostino Dessì.
The photographs in the exhibit include images of landscapes and rituals from the Italian island of Sardinia. All the masks included in the exhibit are hand-made by Agostino Dessì and his daughter. The masks relate to both pagan, earth-based rituals and Greek mythology, as well as renewal or celebratory rituals such as Easter week pageants or the “Carnevale”.
